How To Really Clean Out Your Closet

Spring cleaning isn’t the only time that you should go through the things in your home and clean out the stuff that you no longer need or want to have around. Even if there are things that you want to keep around, that doesn’t mean that you should keep them around. Take a look at this list to help you through the cleaning process so you can have your closet space back.

How To Really Clean Out Your Closet

Get a better closet door

If your closet door allows you to close and lock it, then you are never going to stop shoving everything into that space and forgetting about the mess. Even if you tell yourself that you are not going to stuff things into your closet if they don’t belong, you can’t help it when you order something new and have nowhere to put the old item. If you get a barn door for your closet, you will no longer be able to pile items to the roof of your closet and shut the door behind you. This will also bring a more rustic and cottage aesthetic to your bedroom. So it is a win-win situation.

Pull out absolutely everything from inside of your closet and put it on the floor

If you want to get some actual work done, you want to do something that no one wants to do—take everything out of your closet and put it on your bedroom floor. This is the only way that you are going to get things done. You have to make sure that everything inside of your closet is out of your closet. This is to help you stay motivated. You won’t go to bed or leave the task half-finished if you are unable to move around your room.

Create three boxes for organization

This is a trick that a lot of people use when they aren’t sure whether or not they want to get rid of some things in their homes. You will want to bring out three boxes, bags, or create three sections of flooring in your room for:

  • Keep
  • Maybe
  • Donate / Trash

This will help you keep the chaos organized while you go through everything.

If you haven’t used it or thought about it in six months, put it into the trash or donate box

While it might be hard to get rid of some things in your life, if you haven’t used or thought about an item in at least six months, it is safe to say that you can get rid of it with no backlash or guilt.

If you have thought about it in the last six months, place it in the maybe box

If you have thought about a certain item, but haven’t used it in the last six months, then you should place it in the maybe pile. This will allow you to set it aside and really think about whether or not you want to keep it in your life.

If you have used it in the last 6 months, place it in the box for things you are going to keep

If you have not only thought about something within the last six months, but you have also used it, then you can safely place this into the keep pile. If you have used something this recently, it is safe to say that you still need it in your life. Even if you can’t see yourself immediately using it again.

If you still have a lot of things in your maybe or keep box, think about how often you will use this item

When it is time to look back at your keep box, you want to think about how often you are going to use whatever is inside of it. Think about how much you will get out of these things versus how much someone else would love to have it.

Where will you put this item if you keep it?

Think about where you are going to put this item if you do decide to keep it. If it is only going to go back into your closet, is it worth keeping? If it is going to create a new mess, or just take up space because you aren’t going to use it anytime soon, is it really something that you want to keep?
