7 Budgeting Tips for Your Next Family Vacation

Guest Article Feature

Is it getting harder than ever to picture affording a vacation this year? Take heart, there are ways to organize your budget to get in a fun trip for the family. But get started as soon as possible so you’ll have enough saved up by the time you need to make reservations.

1. Make Savings Your #1 Priority

The mistake many families make is spending first and saving what’s left over. Financial experts say this is the opposite of what we should do. Set aside a reasonable amount to save out of each paycheck, and transfer that money into a special vacation savings account before you do anything else. This way, you’re not tempted to spend your vacation money on other things.

2. Set Aside Certain Funds for Vacation Savings

Do you have a part-time job, get an annuity payment, or any other income from a source other than your primary job? This makes a perfect contribution to your vacation savings. Take the small amount you’re earning from a secondary source and dedicate it to your vacation savings fund.

3. Prioritize Spending

When you’re shopping or browsing online and find something you’re tempted to buy, ask yourself, “Would I rather have this or the vacation?” If the answer is, “A great vacation!” then put the money you would spend on the item into your vacation savings fund. Also, it teaches you to make purchasing decisions based on long-term goals, not whims.

4. Eliminate Unnecessary Spending

Most families eat out, go to the movies, and hit the mall too frequently. Swap your nights or weekends of spending for low-cost fun at home. Dedicate one night per week to prepare a meal together and get out some of the old home movies or a DVD you picked up and never got a chance to see. For the average family of four, you can save almost $200 by swapping a family movie or game night with a night of dinner, a movie, and a trip to the mall.

5. Watch Your Fuel Costs

Are you in the habit of jumping in the car and running to the store every time you realize you’re low on something? This is just one mistake people make that eats away at their ability to afford a good vacation. Keep a list handy and combine those trips into one. Also, invest in a more fuel-efficient vehicle like one from Arrigo Automotive used cars in West Palm Beach. This saves you money on regular errands, but also makes a driving trip more affordable by consuming less gas.

6. Sell Unwanted Stuff to Fund the Vacation

Have you got closets and a garage stuffed with things you never use? Turn this wasted space into a nest egg for your vacation fund. Sell it off on Craig’s List, eBay, or have a yard sale. It’s amazing how much cash you can get for unwanted clothing, shoes, furniture, housewares, gardening tools, and other old items.

7. Have Kids Contribute to Vacation Savings

It’s never too early to start teaching kids how to contribute to the family, even when it comes to affording a vacation. Consider having little Johnny cut the grass to save what you’re paying the neighbor kid, and put the money into the vacation savings. Or, get Jenny to clean the house or babysit to save the money you’d pay for those services. Explain that they are getting paid, but the payment comes at vacation time. Learning delayed gratification is healthy for young people.

With a few minor changes in your daily routines, you can soon have the money you want for a rocking vacation this year.

Freshman Orientation At Monsters University + Trailer – #MonstersUEvent

Disclosure – I received an invite to the #MonstersUEvent. All expenses were paid for and covered by Disney. This post is not a paid post and the opinions stated herein are 100% my own.

Monsters University Alumni

This month I had the opportunity to pack my bags and head to Emeryville California for Freshman Orientation at Monsters University. Once I arrived in Emeryville I met up with my fellow MU classmates and we jumped on board the bus that would take us to our campus. This wasn’t just any bus though, it was definitely a party bus!

MU Cheerleaders

When we pulled up Pixar Animation Studios we were greeted by a MU marching band, cheerleaders and even Squishy’s moms who looked happy to see us. As we got off the bus and made our way down the walkway to the quad, with the amount of excitement that was going on, we knew we were in for a full day of fun!

I will have to admit that I was a little excited to see this live marching band, it was a little loud being so close to them but definitely a great addition to the experience.

MU Marching Band

Once we got to the quad, we were greeted by different clubs that wanted us to join like the MU Debate Team, Greek Council, Art and the MU Improv Club.

After checking out the quad, we headed to the Student Center to pick up our official Monsters University Student ID cards.

Monsters University Student ID Card

Once we had our student id cards, we headed to the cafeteria to eat breakfast before our classes began. After breakfast we attended 5 fun classes where we learned a TON of neat information about how the animation process works and what is involved in making a movie at the Pixar studies. I will be sharing more about the stuff I learned in class soon!

MU-cheerleaders-lunch

After our classes were over it was time for LUNCH. We headed out to the quad we were greeted again by the marching band and cheerleaders. My school mate The Night Owl Mama and I got us some yummy lunch and grabbed a bench outside to enjoy our meal.

MU Lunch

After lunch we headed inside to interview the producer (Kori Rae) and director (Dan Scanlon) of Monsters University. We also got to interview the director (Saschka Unseld) of the new upcoming short The Blue Umbrella. All three of these interviews were very informative and I will be sharing soon what I found out from all three of these interview.

After the interviews it was time to get our SCREAM on. Each of my classmates got to inside this capsule thing and scream as loud as we could. I was loud, but I wasn’t the loudest of the group.

At the end of  the day was Snack Time With Squishy. Not only did we get to have a fun little snack, we got to meet Pete Sohn aka “Squishy” and ask him tons of questions. Pete is such a down to earth guy and very funny. I think he is perfect for the character of Squishy and I will be sharing more about what he had to say too!

Pete Sohn Squishy At Pixar Studios

After we bombarded Pete with all of our questions, we ended the day with a tour of the Pixar Studio, shopping at the Pixar gift shop and of course some group photos of all the MU classmates!

Words DO Hurt – Help To Put an End to Bullying Now

When I was young and someone called me a name, I remember yelling out that phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me“.  Although I remember saying that phrase, I don’t think I ever really meant it. When you are young and you have someone calling you a name that makes you feel bad, sometimes the only way to protect yourself is to act like whatever the person said doesn’t bother you.

sad

During my school years I remember that I always wanted to fit in. I didn’t necessarily want to be the popular crowd, but I didn’t ever want to give kids a reason to pick on me. In school you tend to get judged by what you wear, so  even though my mom wasn’t rich, she always tried to buy me some name brand clothes and shoes for school so I felt good going to school. My mom spent a lot of time rummaging through the sales and clearance racks trying to find me deals that wouldn’t break her pocket that would put a smile on my face. I never made fun of the kids that were less fortunate, but I can’t say that I didn’t see it happen.

Childhood bullying can have a lifelong impact, leading to depression, anxiety, substance abuse and even suicide. But we have the power to prevent it, if we take action.

Now that I am a mom, I have a tendency to worry about my children and the bullies that they might come across at school. When my kid’s come home and tell me about rude or cruel things that other kids have said, it makes me sad and even mad. I teach my kids to be nice to others and treat others how they would like to be treated and am hoping that more and more parents will encourage their children to praise other kids instead of put them down.

Now it is  your turn! Take a pledge today to help to END bullying now!

Your pledge is important! I would love for you to leave me a comment letting me know you have took the pledge!
