How To: Post-Natal Skin Care

When it comes to having a baby, you are often told which skin care products you can and can’t use during your pregnancy. But what happens after the baby is born? Are we free to return to our highly effective Retinols? Does it really matter what we put on our skin? The short answer is: absolutely, but with certain stipulations.

For Breast Feeding Mommies

It is so important to realize that what we put on our skin, to some degree, goes into our bodies, and what goes into our bodies does run the risk of showing up in our breast milk. So, what is a mom to do? Look for brands that offer truly organic skin care options that note that pregnancy use is safe. A good rule of thumb: if it is safe for use during your pregnancy, it will typically be safe for post pregnancy use. With that in mind, consulting with your physician as to whether or not a product is safe is always a good idea.

For Mommies Who Aren’t Breast Feeding

If you are not breast feeding, it is generally safe to return to your usual skin care routine (pregnancy friendly, or not), with one stipulation: be mindful of your fingers. What works for your skin can easily cause irritation to your baby’s sensitive skin, so you will always want to be sure you do not have any remaining product on your hands before holding your little ones. This can be as easy as a hand wash, and allows you to enjoy your favorite skin care products on your face without posing a risk to your little ones!

For All Mommies

It is no secret that mommies to newborns very often have their hands full. So, what is a busy mom to do to keep her skin looking fabulous? If a 5-piece regimen is not ideal for your schedule, make sure to invest in a nourishing face cream. Reach for formulas that are hydrating without being too heavy, and deliver multiple benefits (such as anti-aging, hydration, brightening, oil regulation, or more).

If you are not yet a firm believer in eye creams, there is no better time to after your baby is born to start. Waking up multiple times throughout the night can show up on your entire complexion, but most often makes itself known around your eyes. Reaching for formulas that offer both instant and long term results will have you looking and feeling beautiful and confident, and will help to prevent fine lines and wrinkles in the future!

Last, but certainly not least, never forget to cleanse! Between the hustle and bustle of feedings, diaper changes, and so much more, it can be easy to write off cleansing as a luxury, rather than a necessity. Take the time to cleanse your face twice at night, and once in the morning, following it up with your nourishing face cream!
